What:

Contra Costa Health Services is calling on volunteers to help respond to what is expected to be a busy and unusual flu season. Volunteers are needed to help staff four drive-through flu clinics on the first three Saturdays of November. Breakfast and, lunch and seasonal flu vaccine will be provided to volunteers.

Who:

Anyone 18 years or older is encouraged to volunteer. Medical volunteers are needed to give injections, administer nasal spray vaccine and screen patients. Non-medical volunteers are needed to greet patients, control traffic, collect paperwork and provide general support. Medical volunteers must provide a valid medical license.

When & Where:

Volunteers are needed for shifts between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following Saturdays and locations: November 7 at the Hilltop Mall in Richmond; November 14 at the Somersville Towne Center in Antioch (Antioch Clinic Cancelled); November 21 at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord; and November 21 at a San Ramon location to be determined.

Why:

Volunteers allow the Public Health Department to serve a greater number of people. The flu kills about 36,000 people annually in the United States, but people can help protect themselves by getting vaccinated. H1N1 flu vaccine may also be offered at these clinics.
